There are instances in which social influence is advantageous to an individual. For instance through compliance, a person can influence another one to make a certain decision but only through request or advice. This means that the decision he is advised to take is more beneficial.
This implies that people can be encouraged to accept proposals through compliance, informational influence (desire to get useful information) and obedience. On the other hand, people can be discouraged to accept proposals through reactance also known as ant-conformity and self-fulfilling prophecy ((Perloff, 2008). Through self-fulfilling prophecy, individuals want to do what will make them achieve their intentions without anybody’s influence while ant-conformity is doing exactly the opposite of what others wish since you do not feel like its your creation.
