Unluckily, Gatsby’s American dream is cut short when Daisy does not reciprocate his love for her. He has been waiting for her for the last five years and clearly, love between them is not meant to be. His riches and influence do not help him either. Suddenly, all that he has been living for is destroyed.
In the end, he is tragically murdered by Wilson by a gun shot and this is caused by the same woman for whom he lives his life. The American dream therefore seems like an illusion; something that cannot be attained easily or worse still, cannot be attained at all.
