A bombing campaign was started on 2 March 1965, which was to force North Vietnam to withdraw its support for Viet Cong. However, this campaign lasted for three years although initially it was expected to take a few days.
This was to be achieved by destroying air defenses as well as industrial infrastructure in North Vietnam and at the same time boost the morale of the South Vietnamese army. The Americans thought that showing aggressive attack would increase the participation of the South Vietnam army in conquering the insurgency that was affecting their country.
