A research conducted by Brown, Liang and Weisbenner in 2005 on the costs and benefits of the 401k plans specific to the matching of contributions showed interesting results through simulation. The “simulation results suggest that while portfolio-optimizing employees are made worse off by having their match restricted to company stock, sufficiently risk tolerant employees who follow naïve investment strategies might prefer a 401(k) plan at a company with a company stock match to a plan at a company with an unrestricted match.” (Brown et al., 2006)

The position of this paper is that employees should question their companies about 401k plans and what options are available to them. The employees should conduct some research on the 401k plans and determine how they can invest under the available 401k plans with their respective level of risk tolerance for the different investment options. The reason for this is because the benefits that are available through the 401k plans extensive.
