Sophisticated programs and software have been established to support intermodalism, and while they focus on the aspect of air, road and rail transport they do not take into account the ship based transport. As a result there exists a problem of lack of awareness of the importance of ship based transport. Other issues that are faced by the ship ports pertaining to connections to other modes of transport, lack of technology being invested in and implemented as well as issues with landside access. Moreover the diverse changes taking place in the structure of the ships also involves the ports to have facilities available for ships which are massive and slow and those which are small yet much sleeker and speedier. These problems take the form of different types on loading and unloading docks for the ships as well as the handling and processing of land and rail cargo onto or from the ship.
