Egyptians had several different beliefs in regard to their future life. The very common and simple one was that after a person died his soul continued to exist in the tomb.
When burying the dead the Egyptians used to leave out a hole on the top of the tomb chamber and through that the relatives and friends of the deceased talked to him. Other than this the Egyptians believed that the deceased would require food and other necessary items to continue his life after death. Therefore, on burying the person they supplied him with food, drinks, and even beds within the tombs. That is, they made sure that the dead would not have any trouble later on in his new life.
