A bulk carrier is a colossal vessel used for transporting large amounts or bulk of cargo. The dry bulk cargo carriers are usually large ships which have large storage decks and compartments inside it which can cry loose cargo in bulk. Mostly the type of cargo which is transported through such sea vessels includes agriculture based products, grains, fertilizer, iron ore, as well as coal and sand. These ships initially appeared by the 19th century and since then have been developed and innovated to correspond to the changes taking place in the shipping industry in the 21st century. “The bulk carrier was first developed to carry dry cargoes, which are shipped in large quantities and do not need to be carried in packaged form. The principal bulk cargoes are coal, iron ore, bauxite, phosphate, nitrate and grains such as wheat. The safety of the dry bulk carriers is of crucial importance in the shipping industry as they are usually huge mammoth ships which when loaded are considerably heavy and bulky. As a result the personnel and crew on board the ship required skill and strength to maneuver the ship around in the international waters in a safe manner. These ships need to be extensively maintained and repaired as it is possible for even the cargo which is being carried by the dry bulk carriers to be very dense or abrasive and corrosive in nature. Moreover the presence of hatchways on the deck of the dry bulk carriers can make way for flooding of the underground chamber or the under deck cargo compartments during stormy weather in the international seas. This can cause extensive damage to the cargo as well as the dry bulk carriers as well.
