In a positive client professional relationship the professional has the clear and expansive body of knowledge about the client, in which he/ she uses their skills and judgment. The goals of such a relationship are centered on the clients while the preferences of the client are entertained only as much as they are consistent with positive results from the relationship. In appropriate or negative client professional relationships are usually those where the power held by the professionals is misused or the trust between the parties is broken. When the respect I lost in such a relationship, it tends to fall apart resulting in physical, verbal, financial or emotional/sexual harm being caused to the client at the hands of the professional.

“A boundary violation occurs when you place your needs above the needs of your client and you gain personally and/or professionally at his or her expense” (Newman, 2007). Some of the main causes of such a boundary violation may seem harmless and can take the form of sharing personal information with the client, or taking favors for a client, or even accepting gifts from the client. This is where the professional power is abused in favor of the client for personal gain. A client professional relationship should be free of such issues where the power is used by the professional after acknowledging its existence, comprehending the elements of the power, and accepting how the misuse of the power can result in an imbalance in the client professional relationship.
