The research on the removal of gluten based food from the diet of an autistic patient specifically children is largely explored when it comes to the behavioral changes that occur in the changes.

A research by Cornish (2002) highlights how the use of gluten free diet for the autistic patient does not negatively affect or impact the nutrition of the patient, therefore making it a healthy and safe treatment to employ for removing intake of toxin and harmful options from the diet. “Nutrient intakes fell below the Lower Reference Nutrient Intake (LRNI) in 12 children (32%) for zinc, calcium, iron, vitamin A, vitamin B12 and riboflavin in the non diet group and four children (50%) for zinc and calcium in the diet group. Fruit and vegetable intakes were higher and cereal, bread and potato consumption were lower in those children using gluten and/or casein free diets” (Cornish, 2002). The research therefore concluded that no protein based or energy differences were apparent between the gluten diet and the non diet group. Edelson proposes that natural therapies can be used in conjunction with those prescribed by the doctor to best treat a patient. One of the main toxins that aggravated and generates autism in children is the presence of toxins like mercury in the environment.
