Essay: The Historical book ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’

Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written as a historically accurate novel and is credited with exposing slavery to the masses.  It created a huge following in the North and anger in the South.  Written by an avowed abolitionist, the story depicts the daily tribulations of a slave family.  Knowing this it is highly probable that Stowe (1852) intended the book to foment debate.

Though I don’t believe it was intended as propaganda it ended up providing momentum to the anti-slavery debate and ultimately to Civil War. The fundamental purpose of history is to bring the past to the present and establish a relationship between the two. (Churchill & Lewis, 2009) present a detailed history of the Islamic religion and the various misconceptions regarding Islam and Christianity and how the world views island. Their book ‘Islam: the religion and the people’ does achieve its intended purpose of enlightening us on the history of the particular religion.
